Who qualifies for surgery

manzanaBMI ≥ 40 kg/m2 , morbidly obese. With or without coexisting medical problems and in whom bariatric surgery is not associated with excessive risks.

BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2 and 1 or more medical problems associated with obesity

BMI ≥ 30-34.9 kg/m2 with diabetes or metabolic syndrome, can be offered surgery

(Recently the clinical data in these patients was revised. It is now recommended to offer surgery if there has not been a sustained weight loss or no improvement of comorbidities with non-surgical methods)

There is insufficient evidence to recommend surgery for glycemic control only, or for lowering of cholesterol. There is no evidence for reduction of cardiovascular risk independent of BMI.
